Part of the standard silver series, this
pattern dime features a really cute liberty head that would have been a
fine design for circulation. Small coins are the hardest ones to come up
with an attractive design for. The obverse features a fairly simple
Liberty head with lots of flowing curls, some of which are tied back in a
bun. She is wearing a plain tiara with no writing on it. The reverse has a
wreath with the denomination inside, standard silver above, and the date
below. This coin is also listed as Pollock-787. The standard silver series
was created to get silver coins circulating again by reducing their
weights while keeping the fineness the same. This should prevent the
hoarding and export of silver coins, which was prevalent during the
recently ended civil war. The weight reduction put in place for the
standard silver series was pretty severe, at almost 25% of their weight.
The coins minted for the standard silver series were designed by James
Longacre, but the dies were engraved by William Barber.
