Very attractive half for the grade. A few light hairlines
from improper storage are all that separate this early half from a higher
grade. Medium mirrors with just the slightest hint of cameo contrast on
the reverse. Excellent strike. What appears to be a flaw on the upper right reverse is a
mark on the slab. Very light gold in color, nearly white. Small letters on
the reverse. Exceedingly rare, with some sources giving a mintage of six
pieces and other sources placing the mintage at ten pieces. There seem to
be five or six still in existence, which would indicate an original
mintage of around ten coins, so that is the number that I use. Either way,
it is far and away scarcer than the always popular though overpriced 1804
draped bust silver dollar. Sold May 2007 Questions or comments? Info@pre1917proofs.com Return to Pre-1917 Proof Coins Home Page
